Newborn Landscapes

Etchings. 2017-18. 5x5cm.

Newborn Landscapes consists of maps of islands that have recently been “birthed” into the Arctic and Antarctic oceans by retreating glaciers and melting sea ice. The rapidly changing environment is leaving holes in the accuracy of our geographic knowledge. Using hand-drawn topography based on satellite imagery, I have begun to fill in some of these blank spots - the terra incognita - materializing on the map. The etching plates I use are reclaimed, their previous content having been scraped away to make room for these fetal landmasses, although the ghost-mages remain visible in within them.
